(Spec piece written for REI travel products)

Travel comes in all shapes and sizes. From simply lounging around on the beach to traversing the highest peaks in the world, there are so many different ways that people can experience our amazing planet. However, a handful of places will truly sing to the heart of the adventurer, some that you may not have heard of before. Keep reading to learn five underrated destinations for your next trip.

  1. Sri Lanka

This Sri Lankan train has been coined as “the most scenic train ride in the world” and offers breathtaking routes all over the country.

Located 883 miles south of India, Sri Lanka is a trove of beautiful scenery, rich culture, and impressive jungles. If you like hiking, we recommend making your way to the top of Little Adams Peak just outside of Ella. This can be done solo or with a tour group. If you want to spend the day leisurely exploring the countryside, then maybe the train ride from Ella to Kandy is for you. If you want to see some wildlife, safaris leave daily and showcase some of the most impressive animals on the planet like elephants and tigers.

Sigiriya, or the Lions Rock, is a unique rock formation located in the middle of Sri Lanka. Temples, gardens, and ancient cave paintings can be found here.

Waterfalls, night markets, and beautiful ancient ruins can be found all around the country. You are sure to be enchanted with this country and its people.

Pro travelers tip: it is hard to find clean filtered water in Sri Lanka. You will be drinking out of water bottles the majority of the time. To help save money and waste, we recommend investing in a water purifying water bottle to help you make the most of your busy days.

2. Tanzania

Safaris in Tanzania are a highlight of this country. See lions, zebra, gazelle, elephants, hyenas, and many other incredible animals.

In the spirit of adventure, Tanzania offers the quintessential African experience with limitless options for exploration. This country is the gateway to the Serengeti plains and is Africa’s number one wildlife destination. It is also home to Mt. Kilimanjaro, the highest peak in Africa. Excursion options for both are available. If you are considering hiking Mt. Kilimanjaro, we suggest participating in a training plan before departing, as well as investing in the proper gear. This is our best hiking boot recommendation to ensure that you have a comfortable trek.

Mt. Kilimanjaro is 19,341 ft at its summit and is not for the faint of heart. This trek can be done with a guide and takes between 5-10 days depending on your abilities.

Zanzibar Island is another popular destination for travelers in Tanzania and is the birthplace of the legendary Freddy Mercury. If you are looking for a more leisurely option, there are also hot air balloon tours that leave daily and give travelers some of the best views in the world. This area is also home to many gorgeous beaches that can be perfect for relaxing after finishing a more strenuous activity like summiting Kilimanjaro.

3. Bolivia

The city of La Paz is located at an astounding 11,893 ft and is surrounded by beautiful and dramatic Andean views.

Often when travelers think of South America, Peru and Ecuador take precedence as dream destinations. However, the less trodden Bolivia promises incredible options for thrill-seekers and culture lovers alike. If you are looking to get your heart rate up, you can just take a walk around town! Sitting at 11,983 feet, the altitude of the city of La Paz is staggering, so be sure to take a few days to adjust before embarking on anything too strenuous. While you are adjusting, you can check out the infamous witches’ market (though not for the faint of heart!) or take a ride up the Mi Teleferico.

North Yungas Road makes its way between the city of La Paz and the Yungas region of Bolivia. Extending almost 50 miles, this bucket list item is sure to appease any adrenaline junkie.

Once you have caught your breath, you can make your way to Lake Titicaca, the highest lake in the world, or set out for a day of adventure biking along the North Yungas Road. This trail winds for many miles through the Andes and is considered by some to be the most dangerous biking trail in the world, even claiming lives of the careless from time to time. However, if you are up to the endeavor, it is one of the most breathtaking biking trails as well. If you are planning on doing any hiking and trekking in Bolivia, we suggest investing in a sturdy backpacking backpack and going light for your trip. This will make all the difference as you are moving from destination to destination around the country.

4. Albania

Sandwiched between Greece and Montenegro, and just an overnight ferry ride across the Adriatic from Italy, Albania offers just about everything you could ask for in a destination. From old town European charm to stunning beaches, to cascading cliffy mountains, you can do it all here. This destination is one of the cheaper options on the European continent, which makes it a wonderful location for those trying to backpack or travel on a budget. Donkeys are still a common means of transportation here, so don’t be surprised when you see them around.

A short van ride from the city of Shkoder, Theth is a picturesque fairy tale village that will leave travelers spellbound by its charm and mountain views.

For hikers, there are a handful of multi-day trek options that are available through the Albanian Alps. One of the most well-known of these is the Balkins Trail network, which starts in the small fairy tale town of Theth. These treks can be as long as you would like and have guesthouses along the way that you can reserve in advance. The most common hike length is 3-4 days. For treks extending more than one day, we recommend a solid set of hiking poles to help keep you steady on your way and avoid any injuries.

5. Madagascar

Boabab trees are some of the most recognizable features of Madagascar. These trees are in the succulent family, which means they can absorb water and hold it in their trucks for the dry season, giving them a chubby swollen look at certain times of the year.

Madagascar is home to some of the most incredible foliage and wildlife on earth. Located 1,319 miles off the eastern coast of Africa, you will never run short of things to do in this magical and far-off land. You can swim with sharks, explore its many national parks, or search for wildlife in one of Madagascar’s national wildlife reserves. Lemurs, kookaburras, and aye-ayes are sure to warm your heart and be exciting additions to your trip. Be sure to bring your best camera and sturdy camera bag to capture the beauty of these incredible animals.

Tsingy de Bemaraha National Park boasts epic sky bridges and jagged rock formations unlike any other.

Whether you spend your day traversing sky bridges in Tsingy or kicking back on the pristine beaches of Nosy Be, Madagascar offers high adventure and relaxation options, allowing travelers to create their own unique experiences.
